Volunteer Driver Support Scheme
Your Community Needs You
Blaenavon has always been a place where people look out for one another. The Volunteer Driver Support Scheme is about neighbours helping neighbours, making sure local people can get to essential appointments and community activities.
By giving a small amount of your time, you can brighten someone’s day and help them stay independent, connected, and part of the community they call home.
The scheme is supported by Blaenavon Town Council, Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, and other key partners, working together to improve access to transport across Blaenavon.
How You Can Help
There are two ways to get involved:
Become a Volunteer Driver
Volunteer drivers will support local residents with transport to:
- Health and wellbeing appointments
- Community groups and activities
- Essential shopping
You’ll be helping older residents, people with mobility challenges, and others who might otherwise struggle to get out and about.
Every journey matters, and every volunteer plays a vital role.
To become a volunteer driver you must:
- Hold a full UK driving license
- Have access to your own vehicle
- The vehicle must be compliant with road safety laws
Join the committee as Community Volunteer (Non-Drivers)
We’re also looking for local people who want to help shape and steer the scheme. This could include:
- Sharing local knowledge and ideas
- Helping us understand community needs
- Supporting engagement and promotion
- Being part of conversations about how the scheme develops over time
You don’t need transport experience, just an interest in your community and a willingness to be involved.
No previous volunteering experience is required, just a kind and helpful approach.
You do not have to be a resident living in Blaenavon, just a willingness to drive!
You’re never expected to commit beyond what you’re comfortable with.
What We Offer
- Mileage costs covered (for volunteer drivers)
- Flexible volunteering, you choose the days and times that suit you
- Full support from all partners
- Guidance and checks in place to make sure everyone feels safe and confident
