As part of the 80th anniversary commemorations of VE Day, Blaenavon Town Council hosted a special poetry competition, inviting students from Blaenavon primary schools to reflect on the sacrifices made during one of the most pivotal moments in modern history.
The competition inspired thoughtful and moving entries, with students expressing deep respect and gratitude through their words. Two outstanding poems were selected as winners, each capturing the emotional weight and historical significance of D-Day with remarkable sensitivity and creativity.
In recognition of their achievement, the winners were awarded an annual magazine subscription of their choice — a prize aimed at encouraging continued curiosity, learning, and creative thinking.
The poetry competition formed part of a wider programme of educational activities designed to help students engage with the legacy of D-Day and understand the importance of remembrance through creative expression.
